We are proof that anyone can do it!
My name is Caleb Pike and about 10 months ago I was between 270 and 280 pounds. Currently I weigh about 190 and continue to shed more pounds. I decided to get healthy when I realized that at the rate I was going, I wouldn't be able to keep up with my 1 year old. If I had continued the same path I probably wouldn't have lived to see grandchildren. I was a smoker and a horrible eater.
I started my fitness journey with Farrell's Xtreme Bodyshaping. I actually signed up for the session that would have began in January of 09 but I failed the step test. The step test is a test to check your heart rate and make sure that your heart is strong enough for intense workouts. Well, after 4 minutes of stepping up and down a 10" step my heart rate was too high to continue. I would need a doctor's permission to continue. I left Farrell's that day feeling pretty defeated and like I should crawl into a hole and die. I now had to tell everyone that I was too unfit to get fit. And after a month of building myself up to it, it was a major let down.
I ended up taking that failure and using it to push myself to eat right and work out at home. For the next 10 weeks I used videos I downloaded from the internet and a kettlebell to workout for an hour 3 to 5 days a week. Between working out and eating better I was able to lose 25lbs at home. I then returned to Farrell's, doctor's note in hand, and completed my ten week session. I lost another 20lbs in that session. I have continued with Farrell's ever since and have continued to see more success.
One of the coaches at Farrell's asked me to run with her and a few other people one morning. I said I would try but that I hated to run, and I would only commit to one mile. Well, two miles later I felt like a million bucks. We then decided that we would train for and complete a half marathon, 13.1 miles. Leading up to the half we ran several other shorter races and ran at 5am 2 to 3 days a week. All the while still continuing with Farrell's. Last October we ran the half at the Des Moines Marathon and had a blast.
Since then I have decided to train for and complete the Hy-Vee Triathlon this coming June. I have joined Team in Training and I am currently raising money for cancer research. My girlfriend and I are now working out with Farrell's 3 days a week, swimming 3 days a week, spin class once a week, sports conditioning class 2 days a week and running 3 days a week. All the while keeping full time jobs and being parents with opposite work schedules. We are proof that anyone can do it if they are willing to put in a little effort, or alot.
